In general, a gearbox overhaul includes the following steps:

On-site disassembly of the gearbox

The gearbox is removed from the machine or installation site. If desired, we can also carry out the disassembly at your plant and organize the transport to our gearbox overhaul facility in Moers.

Professional dismantling of the gearbox

At our specialized overhaul workshop, the gearbox is fully disassembled into individual components. Special attention is given to potential indicators of failure causes.

Gearbox cleaning

All parts are thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt and deposits. In addition to manual cleaning, dedicated washing systems for gearbox components are used.

Gearbox assessment

Each component is carefully inspected to detect wear or damage. Defective or worn parts are assessed to determine whether they require reworking or replacement.

Repair or replacement of gearbox components

Damaged or worn components are repaired or replaced. This typically includes seals, bearings, and gears.

Reassembly and function testing

Once all repairs are completed, the gearbox is reassembled. Functional integrity is verified on our test bench, where every overhauled gearbox undergoes a trial run under idle or partial load.

Please note: The exact steps involved in a gearbox overhaul can vary significantly depending on the gearbox type and model. The above outline provides a general overview of the standard procedures we apply.

During gearbox overhauls or reconditioning, all bearings are systematically replaced. The same applies to damaged gears, which are replaced with suitable, high-quality components.

If tooth flank irregularities indicate potential gear overload, we conduct a thorough review of the gear geometry and load design.

Our advanced technical infrastructure and reliable supplier network enable us to restore gearboxes weighing up to 30 tons to like-new condition—even beyond 30 tons in cases of partial disassembly and reassembly.

We exclusively use certified materials for gear components and bearings from renowned manufacturers. Where necessary, we incorporate original spare parts from the respective gearbox manufacturer to ensure optimal quality and compatibility.

The reasons for gearbox failure can vary widely. In many cases, a major gearbox breakdown originates from seemingly minor damage.

If such “minor” damage goes undetected, it will sooner or later lead to an unexpected gearbox failure.

Unplanned downtime and the resulting production losses—especially when a suitable replacement gearbox is not immediately available—almost always exceed the cost of a professional gearbox overhaul.

Below, we have compiled a selection of common gearbox defects and their underlying causes. Many of these early-stage failures can be prevented through reliable gearbox monitoring, also known as condition monitoring. Please refer to the section on gearbox monitoring for more details.
